Ron Weasley is well aware that he is not the smartest kid in town. Or like his brother would have said – not the brightest crayon in the box. He is good at strategy and nobody can beat him in a game of chess. But emotions are a book in a foreign language that he doesn´t understand at all.

Hermione once said that he had the emotional range of a teaspoon, and he is still puzzled by what she might have meant by that. So yes he is not the smartest kid all around, and although he has a temper he also isn´t the fire that burns the brightest. He leaves that to Harry.

Harry, who can always depend on him when the going gets really tough. Ron knows that people might argue about that, after all he has run away from Harry before, and by god Ron knows also that he had a lot to learn over the course of their friendship, but learned he has.

He has become Harrys rock. So who is he to argue if Harry all of a sudden decides that he wants to pursue the iceprince of Slytherin. He has seen him watch Draco at night often enough, to know arguing is futile. So as long as Harry is happy, he will keep his mouth shut.

All he does is ask one night. "So Draco Malfoy, mate you sure you haven´t gone round the twist?“ Harry just looks at him and smiles. „Well I did wonder if my sanity has finally gone out of the windows, and I don´t understand it entirely myself, but I want him to be himself again.“

Ron just shakes his head. "Look I don´t even want to pretend that I understand what you see in him, and I have to admit that I kind of liked him all quiet and meek. But you are right, it is kind of boring now, without someone to bicker with.“

Harry´s eyes bore into him for a second and then he nods.“Thanks.“ And that is all that is said on the matter. If the ferret manages to mess this up, Ron knows he will shake some sense into the guy. But looking at them talk quietly and the way Draco leans closer to Harry as if drawn to a warming fire, and Harry's arm slung protectively around the slender shoulders, he doesn´t have a feeling that this will be necessary anytime soon.

His eyes rove over the common room, Hermione is bend over a book – deep in discussion with Blaise and although it still gives him a pang, he know that one day they will be alright. She deserves someone who shines as brightly as she does and he is more of a solid and simple guy. He will always be there for both of his friends, and right now he can be the silent rock in the background.

He is more than a little shocked, when Pansy approaches him cautiously and asks.

"I heard you are good at chess?“

He looks at her. She has a pale face and is actually kind of pretty with her button nose and the dark eyes. He knows that Harry has forgiven her, and he has learned to trust Harry's judgement of people. So all he says is.

"Jup, I play a decent game. Want to play with me?“

She settles down across from him and looks at him with grateful eyes, almost like a puppy that expected a kick instead of a friendly pat on the back. And with that smile on her face she is really pretty.

Ron isn´t the brightest crayon in the box, he knows that. But he sees that Harry is happy with Draco and Hermione is getting there with Blaise. His friends don´t need him right now, as much as they used to and Pansy might be lonley – so he can be there for her too, as long as she needs a rock to lean on.
