Draco knows that something is wrong, the moment that the owl arrives at the Manor. The bird looks harried and hoots as if in distress. It is with trembling fingers that he unrolls the tiny scroll attached to its leg. It grows to its original size and he reads with growing trepidation.
Draco,
can you let me know please if Teddy is with you? He hasn´t come home from school and Harry has just told me that he is not a Grimmauld Place either. I worry that something happened to him.
Andromeda
Draco curses and all but runs downstairs to his mothers rooms. He passes the stairwell wrought with garland and holly and the wreath hung up over the fireplace. Teddy has left his mark on the Manor during the time that he has been here with Harry.
“Mum, have you seen Teddy?” He all but falls through the door and Narcissa jumps up in alarm at his state.
“No isn`t he with Harry and Andromeda?”
“I just got an owl that he has disappeared.”
“Oh my!” She turns pale and Draco feels fear creep up on him.
The door bangs open just in that moment and Harry stumble through.
“Harry!” Draco rushes to him and grasps his arms.”Do you have an idea where he could be?”
Harry nods. “I have a light tracking charm on him, for a case like this. It activates when he is gone for more than four hours from home, without someone we trust.”
Draco just nods. “Ok where is he?”
Harry looks grim, “I could only track him to Malfoy grounds. Since he is technically with someone I trust with my life, the charm has deactived.”
“Fuck” Draco can´t even care about language any longer. The Malfoy grounds are sprawling – covered with forest on a large part and he just hopes that Teddy hasn´t wandered into the forest too deeply. It is cold out there, snowing incessently. He grabs a warm cloak and another one for Harry and simply heads outside towards the stables.
He saddles two horses and just says. “I hope you can stay on a horse for a bit.”
Harry looks slighly green but climbs onto the horse. Together they set of and Draco can´t help but blame himself, who knows what Teddy has gotten into his mind, why did he decide to come here alone and without talking to him or Narcissa? Maybe he is so disappointed in Dracos refusal to have a Christmas Party that he didn´t want to talk to him and then got lost when trying to get here. The knight bus drops the people of on the gates but the way to the Manor is winding and in the storm he might have lost his orientation.
“Point me!” he casts and veers of the path. To himself he swears that whatever Teddy wants from him he will do it if they only find him healthy and whole. He casts a look to the side and sees Harry right next to him. Looking fierce and determined and he feels his heart go out to him. Because of this he misses a low hanging branch and finds himself in the snow, aching all over because of the fall, but he simply gets up and approaches his horse again, calming it a little, getting back into the saddle and continuing his search.
Later he will blame the adrenaline and fear for not noticing a deciding detail in that moment. Harry simply nods at him and they take of again. They both loose any feeling for time, but it can´t be that long because dusk is just falling when they arrive at a clearing that the “Point me” spell has lead them to.Still too long to be out in the cold for a little boy.
Draco can´t believe his eyes.
In the middle of the clearing he sees a single tree, and on that tree a myriad of ice fairys sit and give it the appearance of exclusive christmas ornaments. But it is what is beneath that tree that has Draco out of the saddle in a flash and on his knees next to the small bundle that is huddled into a ball as close as it can.
He takes of his cloak and wraps Teddy in it, crushing him close.
“Don´t ever scare us like this again, Teddy, never again do you hear me?!”
“Uncle Draco you came!” Teddy smiles radiantly at him and lays his fingers onto his cheek as if he needs to check that he is not dreaming this.
Draco freezes.
He can feel the trembling cold hand on the skin of his cheek.
